A recently approved $132 million financial plan will allow several schools in Syracuse, NY to receive more than a fresh coat of paint.
The Joint Schools Construction Board, which supervises district wide renovation programs, recently approved the financial plan that funds renovation projects for schools in Syracuse.
The financial plan is the budget document required to issue bonds to pay for the projects.
The budget plan requires that the bonds be within Syracuse’s overall structural debt capacity and it must be able to be repaid from the State Education Department.
Despite this, state aid will reimburse the project.
“Many of the schools haven’t been renovated in 50 years,” Dr. Cynthia Kirby, Vice-President of the Syracuse City School Board said.
Kirby also said that buildings that are in dire need are in Phase I, the first round of construction.
Phase I Schools such as Fowler High School and Dr. Weeks Elementary will receive updated facilities and installation of mechanical systems including heating and electrical.
“The whole purpose of the school renovation project is to provide quality educational environments that induce and encourage a child's ability to learn,” says Christine M. Fix, secretary of the Joint School Board.
“This includes updated school infrastructure, enhanced teaching environs, per student space allocations and aesthetics that increase motivation and pride,” Fix said.
Before construction can begin, the state comptroller must grant state approval of its financial plan for Phase I.
The Board expects the state comptroller to make a decision in late May.
