Syracuse University alum Fred Silverman visited the Newhouse School on Wednesday for a day dedicated to his work in the television industry.
The program entitled “From Test Patterns to Pixels: Envisioning the Future of Television” was made up of six sessions, each focusing on an individual aspect of television and Silverman’s impact on the business.
The unofficial “main event” of the day was an interview of Silverman given by 60 Minutes correspondent and SU’s own Steve Kroft.
The interview began with a brief overview of the programs Silverman introduced to the airwaves including All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and Hill Street Blues.
“It’s a strange feeling, sitting out here and watching your life flash before you,” Silverman said.
Kroft asked Silverman which show he would pick as the one he was the proudest to leave behind and while Silverman could not pick just one, Roots was a mini-series that far exceeded his expectations.
“Though I thought it would be a success, I didn’t think it would be a phenomenon,” Silverman said.
