Syracuse University dedicated a symposium to producer and television executive Fred Silverman, the only person to ever run programming in all three ABC, CBS, and NBC.
As part of the event, Steve Kroft, correspondent for CBS news magazine "60 Minutes", had a one-on-one interview with Silverman.
Silverman said broadcast networks are “struggling to stay alive” and that their problem is that they are playing it too safe.
According to Silverman, networks had great hits in the past like “Roseanne” and “The Cosby Show” because they took chances.
“I don’t see that anymore and that’s unfortunate,” he said.
Silverman said that if he were still in the industry he would “make an effort to put on shows that reflect the world we live in.” For example, a family that faces problems of how they are going to pay the rent, he said.
Silverman described most reality television as “garbage.” “There must be a better way to fill up the time periods,” he said.
If had just graduated college and was looking for a job he would look towards the internet because “it has nothing but growth ahead of it,” Silverman said.
