A Legend visits Newhouse

Fred Silverman has the distinct honor of being the only person to head programming at all three network television studios.

The Newhouse School at Syracuse University spent Wednesday honoring him while at the same time taking a look into the future of television.

Syracuse was also joined by 60 minutes correspondent Steve Croft who interview Silverman. Croft asked Silverman’s opinion on why he found so much success in the TV industry.

Silverman responded he had “ the ability to find programs that people would enjoy.”

Silverman found hits such as Mash, All in the Family and Roots during his long tenure with all three networks.

When asked about the future of programming Silverman thought the Internet would play a major role in televisions growth. “

The internet has nothing but growth ahead of it” Silverman said.
Croft also interviewed Silverman on what was wrong with network television today. Silverman responded saying a lack of creativity and tough economic times contributed to the problem.

Silverman also added there was no “personal touch” left in the networks who are controlled by massive media conglomerates.

Silverman showed his views on nearly everything else surrounding television during the all day event hosted by Newhouse.
