The Boy Scouts is an activity that many boys in America partake in, so the news about a fatal accident at a summer Boy Scout Camp shocked many people.
Last July at a Boy Scout Camp in New Jersey, Eagle Scout Brian Lenz, 18, was showing the other campers a trick called the “circle of fire,” in which Lenz squirted rubbing alcohol in a pattern and then lit it on fire.
As Lenz was demonstrating the trick he tried to relight what he believed was a dying flame, when the flame jumped from the table across the liquid stream and ignited the rubbing alcohol. Lenz flung the bottle, spraying flaming alcohol onto the Scouts surrounding him.
Sean Whitley, 17, was burned on his legs and abdomen and died four days later, and two other scouts were burned and released from the hospital.
“Even one incident like this is one too many.” said Scout executive for the Jersey Shore Council, Craig Shelley. “We have redoubled our efforts to ensure the safety of every child in our care.”
On Thursday, Lenz pleaded not guilty to the charge of aggravated assault. Lenz is being admitted to a pretrial intervention program that will help him avoid jail and a criminal record.
