An Ohio man accused of murdering his identical twin will await a new trial after his first one ended in a mistrial. Upon the death of her sister-in-law, one of the trial's twelve jurors excused herself from the proceedings, leaving Judge Guy Reece of Franklin County Common Pleas Court with only 11 people to decide the verdict. Proceedings will continue within the next two to three months.
Derris Lewis, 19, pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping in the January killing of his brother, Dennis at their mother’s house.
While Lewis’ mother claims that between three and five masked men held her at gunpoint as they beat and shot her son, police believe Derris acted alone on the January 2008 night in question.
Community members familiar with the family say that the Lewis twins were extremely close before Dennis’ death. The brothers were high school seniors at the time of the murder.
