A Syracuse man was sentenced to 15 years to life for killing a man during a marijuana sale.
Courtney Saunders, 23, pleaded guilty of shooting DuUwezo Ross, 28, during an attempted robbery.
Ross and his stepbrother were in a car outside a Syracuse market, where they were to carry out the drug deal. Saunders got in and tried to rob them at gunpoint.
After unsuccessfully trying to wrestle the gun out of Saunders’s hands, Ross tried to get out of the car and escape but Saunders shot him in the back, said Senior Assistant District Attorney Robert Duncanson.
During the sentencing, Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi, complained that his previous sentencings had not helped decrease the violence in the community.
Wanda Ross, Ross’s mother, said in court she could never forgive Saunders for the murder of her son and showed him a picture telling him to look at the person he shot.
