An Austrian man faces a life sentence after keeping his daughter captive and raping her for 24 years.
"I regret it with all my heart ... I can't make it right anymore," said Josef Fritzl.
While in captivity, his daughter, Elisabeth, gave birth to seven children, all of whom Fritzl is the father. He is also charged with homicide for letting one of the children die as a newborn.
Three of the children had been kept in the dungeon their whole lives until the trial started. The other three were raised upstairs by Fritzl and his wife. He told her Elisabeth abandoned the children when she ran away at the age of 18. They now range between the ages of 6 and 20.
Fritzl decided to plead guilty when he saw his daughter’s video testimony.
During the closing statement, his lawyer admitted that Fritzl had raped his daughter 3,000 times, some of which were in front of the children.
Fritzl will receive psychiatric treatment while in prison and will not be eligible for parole for at least 15 years.
