The Onondaga lake, once considered the center of culture and geography for Syracuse, is the most polluted lake in the United States. But, not for long.
County Executive Joanie Mahoney, Onondaga County, plans on using money issued by Federal Stimulus to clean up pollution in the Lake with state grants.
Mahoney discussed Tuesday her plans to end the current sewage treatments the city of Syracuse currently has in place.
"We are leading the way," Mahoney stated in hopes of other New York counties following the same geopolitical route.
Mahoney wants to end the overflow of sewage combined with rainwater into the Onondaga Lake through a variety of options. The "Save the Rain" campaign encourages a variety of improvements from shifting positions of downspouts, to creating rain gardens, to developing new technologies by county staff.
The "Save the Rain" campaign is expected to save approximately 17% of the rainwater drainage, says Mahoney.
The funds issued by the state are some of the first to stride towards environmental change.
It is the County Executive's hope that the community's reliance on sewage treatment facilities, such as the controversial Midland Ave. facility, disappears with changes in the water pollution of Onondaga County.
