Magna is a Canadian auto-parts factory, and in the past months, Magna Union workers rejected the contracts that would have kept the factory from closing.
After workers rejected the second contract, Magna announced it would soon begin the process of relocating. In the weeks following the announcement, Union workers attempted to make contracts with the company, but none of them were successful.
The final attempt to keep the company in Syracuse involved the U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. Schumer offered the plant $5 billion of federal loans that are meant for the domestic auto parts industry.
The company declined the offer, claiming that money was not the only problem. The company is still planning to close and relocate because it would like to see major changes in the work rules as well as a restructuring of operations.
When the company closes, it will leave 1,400 in the area without a job.
