The death of well-known actress Natasha Richardson on Wednesday has reminded many that skiing can be a dangerous sport.
Richardson fell and hit her head during a beginner’s ski lesson in Montreal.
She is the second skier to die in the past month as a result of an accident on the slopes.
A 13-year-old South Korean exchange student died last month after losing control and hitting a tree. Neither of the skiers was wearing a helmet.
Since last month’s death, doctors have been pushing to mandate helmet use for all skiers and the very public death of Richardson has pushed the issue to the front.
Though Ski resort operators favor and encourage the use of helmets, they are not in support of a law. Alexis Boyer of the Quebec Ski Areas Association fears having to police their guests if helmets are mandated.
Sports Minister Michelle Courchesne met with doctors to discuss the reasons for the law and will meet with Quebec ski resort owners and operators before any decisions are made.
