As stimulus money begins to trickle into the economy, counties throughout the United States have “shovel ready” projects planned and ready to go.Onondaga County is no exception. With projects ranging from road construction to environmentally green projects, Onondaga County is looking forward to putting the federal stimulus money to use.
“Save the Rain”, an environmental project, which will reduce contamination in Onondaga Lake, is a top priority for Onondaga County.
Onondaga County uses an antiquated combined sewer system. This system combines run-off water with sanitary waste.
During periods of melting snow or heavy rains, sewers are unable to maintain run-off water and waste. The excess flows into Onondaga Creek, polluting it with raw sewage.
Onondaga County Executive, Joanne Mahoney, is taking initiative and starting a “green revolution”.
Mahoney is encouraging residents to use rain buckets to control the amount of run-off that will directly enter the sewer system.
By redirecting run-off patterns, the County could reduce 17% of water that would enter the sewer system, Mahoney said.
This green infrastructure will eliminate the need for another sewage treatment plant in the county.
