Mahoney closely lost the mayoral race against Mayor Matt Driscoll in 2005, but that did not stop her. In 2007, the Onondaga County Executive left the position, and Mahoney decided to get her name on the ballot.
It was an uphill battle from the start. Mohoney, a registered Republican, first tried to get on the republican ballot. The Republican office was already supporting another candidate, she said, telling the mother of four that she needed to take care of her children instead.
However, Mahoney said "I'm running because of my kids."
In a state where many residents are leaving, Mahoney is hoping to create reasons for people, and her children, to stay.
Mahoney had to petition to earn a spot on the Republican primary ballot, though the county republican party still worked against her in many ways.
With 21 votes, Mahoney beat the party candidate and followed by defeating the democratic candidate, becoming the third Onondaga County Executive.
Since her election, Mahoney has chosen the best and the brightest to be on her team, many of whom happen to be women as well.
Her past defeat in the Mayoral election and her disagreements with the county republican party have not stopped her from doing her job.
Also the first female County Executive, Mahoney proves over and over again that she deserves the position that she worked so hard to attain.
