2009 has not begun as a good year for flying. Only three months into the year and there have already been several plane crashes, including one that hit home for many New Yorkers.
On the evening of February 12, news broke of Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashing into a house in Clarence Center, a Buffalo suburb.
At the time of the crash, in which 50 people died, ice was thought to be the cause of the accident.
However, new information surfaced Thursday suggesting that the accident may have been due to human error rather than mechanical error.
The plane's flight data reporter indicated that its stall warming system had activated before the accident and although there was some ice accumulation, no mechanical problems were found with the plane, Federal Safety investigators said.
"The ice in the Buffalo crash wasn't anything the plane shouldn't have been able to handle." Greg Phillips, a former National Transportation Safety Board accident investigator said.
Investigators are still continuing to examine the plane's de-icing system, as well as the flight's data recorder.
The NTSB Board has scheduled a three-day public hearing for May 12-14 that will cover a range of safety issues involving the plane and its performance.
