The Onondaga County Health Department received over 100 reports of food-related sicknesses, officials said Wednesday.
The department confirmed seven cases of Shigellosis, says Onondaga Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow. An additional 52 people with similar symptoms are waiting for test results.
Fecal matter is typically the carrier of the bacteria.
Shigellosis causes bloody diarrhea, fevers, and stomach cramps about a day after exposure, says Morrow. The symptoms usually last five to seven days.
The seven Applebee's guests with confirmed Shigellosis dined wither Saturday, March 7 or Sunday, March 8.
Yet health officials are investigating the period of Sunday, March 1 to Friday, March 20. Up to 9,o00 guests could have been exposed.
"There's nothing more important than the well-being of our guests," says Applebee's director of marketing Stephanie Griffin.
Possible food culprits are lemons and limes.
