The “Cheesehead State” took the win at the United States Championship Cheese Contest on Thursday. A Wisconsin company beat out 32 other states at the gathering of America’s cheese and butter makers with a parmesan cheese. Sartori Food Corp. won the gold with its SarVecchio parmesan at the contest which was held in Green Bay, WI.
The national competition started in 1981, and has expanded throughout the years. This year a group of 1,340 cheeses and butters were judged by 22 taste specialists over the course of three days. Those entered competed in 64 categories, hoping for a gold, silver, or bronze medal.
The judges tasted the cheeses, judging on overall flavor, texture, appearance, and body. Each cheese started with a score of 100, with golds usually going to cheeses with a score of 98-99.
Second place went to a hard goats’ milk cheese from Ore. and third place was won by a medium cheddar from NY. It is clear in this competition; the cheese does not stand alone.
